How does the OraQuick test work?

Antibodies to HIV from the oral fluid are collected through a swab.

As soon as the device is inserted into the test tube, the oral fluid mixes with the liquid and rises up the test stick..

If the C-Line shows up, it confirms that the test is working properly. If the C-Line does not occur, the test does not work. If only C-Line appears, the test is negative.

HIV antibodies collected on line T indicate a positive test result.

What is the test for?

HIV testing is important for your health. An increasing number of newly infected people continue to pose serious risks to health. The main causes of high HIV incidence are the use of unsterilized syringes and unprotected sex.
The fact is that HIV can be prevented, and you can reduce or completely eliminate the risk of the disease. Early detection will lead to early treatment and better results. Many people live long, normal lives because they have timely learned about their HIV-positive status.

What needs to be done before taking the test

There are some requirements that you have to fulfill before taking the test. Some people may feel a little anxious about HIV testing. But if you are very worried, you may decide to wait a bit or get tested at a local clinic.
List of the requirements to prepare for the test:
• Don’t eat, drink, or use oral care products (such as a mouthwash, a toothpaste, or whitening strips for teeth) 30 minutes before starting this test.
• Remove the dentures or any other products that cover your gums.
• Carefully read the instructions contained in the test kit to obtain accurate results
• Please make sure to read the information on the back of the box.
• Ensure that you have a timer, a clock/watch, or another device that would help you note down the time.
• It will be useful to have a telephone at hand to stay in touch with a Support Center consultant.
Other important information:
• You have to be at least 17 years of age to use this test.
• If you are HIV-positive or undergoing HIV treatment or preventive care, the OraQuick test is not intended for you.
• If you have participated in an HIV vaccine clinical trial, you may get a positive result after taking this test, but this may not mean that you are infected with HIV. You should seek a follow-up observation from the research team.
Don’t use the test if:
• The tamper-evident seal was broken, or the package contents are missing, broken, or opened.
• The expiration date of the test is past the date printed on the outside of the box.
• The test was exposed to household cleaning products.
• The test was stored outside the acceptable temperature of 2 °C — 27 °C.
• Remember that this test detects HIV infection if you used it 3 months after suspecting to have been infected. That is because OraQuick detects antibodies to HIV, and it takes your body up to 3 months to produce these antibodies in the amount that can be detected by this test.

If your test result is negative, and you are engaged in activities that put you at risk of contracting HIV, you should be tested regularly.
